Operatory Instructions
What to do after
Periodontal surgeries so you can heal faster.
Here you will find answers to many common questions
our patients have after surgery. In addition,
there are several hints, tips, and instructions
for you that will help speed up recovery and make
the healing experience as comfortable as possible.
Periodontal Dressings: A periodontal
dressing may be placed to cover treated areas
and will often remain intact until your next appointment.
If the dressing should come off or break there
is no cause for alarm. However, do not attempt
to remove it if it stays put.
Eating and Brushing:
A nourishing diet of high proteins and plenty
of fluids will aid in healing. Try eating soft
foods such as: soups,
scrambled or boiled eggs, omelets, noodle casseroles,
macaroni and cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, mashed
potatoes, canned vegetables, canned fruit, apple
sauce, puddings, or frappes. Eat those
things that feel comfortable to eat. Do not chew
on the side of your mouth just treated and minimize
brushing the area until sutures have been removed
or the area is evaluated 1-2 weeks later. BRUSH
ONLY ON THE TEETH on the surgical area. Stay away
from the stitches and packing. You may dislodge
it. Brush and floss areas that has NOT been operated
on as usual. Drinking will not affect healing.
DO NOT SMOKE.
Sutures:
Sutures may become loose and fall out after a
few days. However , all remaining sutures will
be removed at the office when you come back for
your post surgical check up one or two weeks after
surgery
Physical Exertion:
Avoid excessive exertion of any type for 48 hours
following surgery.
Puffiness
and Swelling:
In some cases puffiness or mild swelling my result.
This may be kept at a minimum by holding an ice
bag on the outside cheek area, for the first day
after your surgery (10 minutes on 10 minutes off
up to 24 hours). NOTE:
If swelling continues to increase after three days
please call our office 714-997-1551.
Pain
and/or Discomfort:
Mild
to moderate discomfort is readily controlled with
a prescription pain medicine as directed.
Antibiotic Medication:
If penicillin or other antibiotics are necessary,
we will give you a prescription. Please continue
taking the antibiotic as prescribed until finished.
Bleeding:
Occasional blood in the saliva may be expected.
If some bleeding continues, rinse with cold water
and take a piece of gauze or a cold moist tea
bag and cover the area under pressure for 20 minutes
or until bleeding minimizes or stops. NOTE: Hot
liquids may stimulate bleeding up to 24 hours
following surgery.
Unpleasant Taste:
If you develop an unpleasant taste, you may gently
rinse with water or with your prescribed mouth
rinse.
Hot and Cold Sensitivity:
After some types of surgery you may experience
sensitivity on the surgical area to hot or cold
temperature. This generally resolves in a few
weeks. Desensitizing medications can also be prescribed
or applied in our office to resolve sensitivity.
